When Coping Skills Stop Working

Coping skills usually stop working because the load got heavier, or because they were managing symptoms while the cause stayed untouched. It isn’t because you’re doing them wrong.

If the breathing exercises, journaling, and walks that used to carry you just aren’t cutting it anymore, here’s what might be going on, and what to do next.

Why coping skills stop working

The load grew. Skills that handled a normal week may not handle a divorce, a sick parent, and a new job at the same time.

They were treating symptoms, not the cause. Coping skills calm the alarm. They don’t always turn off what’s setting it off. Unprocessed trauma or grief can keep the alarm going.

They were built for a different season of life. What worked at 25 might not fit at 45 with kids and a mortgage.

Coping turned into avoidance. Scrolling, staying busy, or a glass of wine can start as relief and slowly become a way of not feeling anything.

Signs it’s time for more support

  • You’re using your skills more and feeling worse
  • You’re tired all the time, even after rest
  • Small things set you off, or nothing reaches you at all
  • You’re relying more on alcohol, substances, or other habits to get through
  • The people around you have noticed a change

What to do next

Don’t throw your skills out. They still matter. They just may not be enough alone right now.

Get curious instead of critical. Ask “what am I trying to cope with?” not “why can’t I handle this?”

Add support. Therapy can help you find what’s underneath, so you’re not just managing the alarm forever.

How we can help

Our clinicians help clients sort out what’s really driving the overwhelm. That might be trauma, anxiety, depression, grief, or burnout. If substance use has become part of how you cope, we also offer addictions counseling without judgment.

Does needing therapy mean my coping skills failed?

No. It usually means you’re carrying more than one person should carry alone. Skills and therapy work best together.

I’ve been drinking more to cope. Is that a problem?

It’s worth looking at, without shame. If you’re unsure, a conversation with one of our addictions counselors can help you sort it out.

How long are sessions?

Most sessions run about 50 to 60 minutes, depending on the type of therapy.
